A Sunset Hill Dining Room Designed for Real Family Life

This Sunset Hill dining room in Seattle needed to balance two things that do not always go together easily. It had to be durable enough for everyday use with young children and two cats, while still feeling elevated and in line with the traditional character of the home. This is often where design either succeeds or falls apart. A space can look beautiful, but if it does not hold up to how it is used, it will not last.

Starting With What Matters

The foundation of this room was already in place. The homeowners had an heirloom oak dining table that carried both history and presence. This piece set the tone for the entire design. Rather than working around it, we leaned into it.

We paired the table with black Windsor chairs. The contrast grounds the space and gives it a more current feel without taking away from the traditional roots of the home. Above the table, we added a brass chandelier with black shades. In the evening, it creates a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes the room feel more intimate.

Designing Around Heirloom Pieces

Another important element in this dining room is the existing hutch. It houses a collection of European china and serving pieces that have been collected over time. This is not just storage. It is part of the story of the home. We treated it as such and made sure it remained a focal point within the space.

Materials That Hold Up

Durability was a key driver in every decision.

The custom drapery was designed with both performance and appearance in mind. We selected velvet, which may seem like an unexpected choice for a home with cats, but it is surprisingly resilient. Cats tend to avoid it, and it holds up well over time.

The rug features a busy pattern that helps conceal the realities of daily life. In a dining room that sees frequent use, this matters. It allows the space to stay presentable without constant maintenance.

Adding Layers Without Overcomplicating the Room

We introduced a gallery wall with vintage artwork to bring depth and personality into the space. These pieces complement the traditional architecture while keeping the room from feeling static. Every addition was considered. Nothing was added without purpose.

A Dining Room That Works Every Day

The result is a dining room that feels comfortable and refined at the same time. It supports family dinners, busy mornings, and gatherings with friends. It reflects the character of the home while adapting to the realities of everyday life.

This Sunset Hill dining room is a good example of how we approach interior design in Seattle.

We consider how a space will be used first. Then we build a design that supports that use while staying true to the home and the people who live in it.
