A Booklovers Retreat

This primary bedroom in a 1930s Seattle Tudor had great potential, but like many older homes, it came with quirks. The client, a thoughtful booklover with a love for art and quiet spaces, wanted a room that felt deeply personal. They imagined a place to display their favorite books, surround themselves with art, and unwind in a cozy reading nook. Instead, the space felt cold and unresolved.
The design goals were clear. We needed to create a warm, grounded retreat that supported rest and reflection. We needed to work with architectural constraints without compromising beauty. We also wanted to make space for books, art, and a reading area, all without major construction.
The bed had to go in front of a window. Rather than fight it, we selected a cane headboard that lets natural light pass through while still offering visual structure. It brought a quiet elegance to the room.
One off-center window disrupted the room's balance. We addressed it with a gallery wall that brought visual weight, warmth, and a sense of story. The eye is now drawn to the art instead of the asymmetry.
Stark drywall made the room feel bare. A moody, dark paint color changed everything, adding intimacy and quiet. The room now feels calm from the moment you step in.
We sourced art internationally, including a striking piece from Italian-born artist Marco Sassone. Custom fabrics from trade-only vendors added softness and depth. Every element was chosen with the client’s lifestyle and passions in mind. These are the kinds of thoughtful touches that set luxury interior design apart, especially when working with an interior design company that understands both aesthetics and functionality.
No square footage was added. No walls were moved. Just thoughtful, personal design that brought the space to life. The reading nook invites quiet moments. The gallery wall tells a story. The room reflects the person who lives there.
