Traditional Tudor Meets Mid Century Modern

Perched above a bluff in Ballard with sweeping Puget Sound views, this stately Tudor home blends old world craftsmanship with the energy of a young Seattle family.

A cozy bedroom with a large bed featuring white linens and a plaid pillow, flanked by bedside lamps. There are two windows with wooden frames, a potted plant, and seating area with chairs and a small table. An abstract painting hangs above the bed, and a tufted leather bench sits at the foot of the bed.

The architecture is rich with original wood floors, detailed trim, solid wood doors, and beautiful hardware. Our clients loved the character of their traditional Tudor home but wanted their primary bedroom to feel less formal and more reflective of their love for mid century modern design.

A wooden shelf with decorative objects, including figurines and books, next to a potted snake plant and a tall ceramic vase, with a framed colorful bird artwork on the wall.

The challenge in this Seattle bedroom remodel was balance. The home carries strong architectural identity, while the clients gravitate toward modern, playful furniture and vintage mid century pieces. The goal was to create a bedroom that felt relaxed and personal without fighting the integrity of the house.

A cozy bedroom with wooden floors and white walls, featuring a bed with white linens, a brown leather bench at the foot, a seating area with two white chairs and a small table near large windows, a houseplant, a wooden bookshelf with decorative items and books, and a large floor lamp.

We began by honoring the existing architecture. The warm wood floors and trim were treated as assets rather than obstacles. Instead of introducing stark contrast, we layered in complementary tones and textures that allowed the Tudor character to remain intact.

A comfortable, tailored bed anchors the room and softens the formality of the space. A wool rug adds warmth and texture underfoot, helping balance the richness of the wood floors while creating a grounded, inviting atmosphere. Custom window treatments were designed to address an oddly placed window, providing visual balance and softness while framing the Sound view beyond.

A pair of round eyeglasses with a tortoise shell frame placed on an open book, with a rolled-up newspaper underneath. In the background, there are two closed books stacked on top of each other.

To reflect the family’s love of mid century modern furniture, we incorporated a vintage MCM sideboard that now displays treasures collected during their travels. The piece bridges eras beautifully. It brings modern lines and personality into the room while still respecting the home’s traditional envelope.

A cozy living room corner with large windows, a white armchair with a blue pillow, a side table with mugs and a tray, a black and white patterned rug, a dark wall lamp, and green indoor plants.

Two comfortable chairs were added to create a seating area that takes advantage of the Puget Sound views. This move solved the asymmetry created by the window placement and introduced a casual layer that makes the bedroom feel lived in rather than formal.

This Ballard bedroom design demonstrates how traditional Seattle architecture and mid century modern interiors can coexist gracefully. By carefully balancing historic details with modern furniture, custom window treatments, layered textiles, and thoughtful layout decisions, we created a primary bedroom that feels both rooted and relaxed.
